Understanding Deabolts: A Guide to Security

Our locksmiths love deadbolts. These locks are common in Salisbury and across the UK, often used as secondary security locks. A key turn engages the bolt, locking it into the strike plate in the frame. Deadlocks require manual locking and unlocking, offering better protection than a nightlatch against forced entry. They come in three main types, each with different security levels, sizes, and finishes.

Types of Deadbolts

3 Lever Deadlock – Basic Internal Security

A 3 lever deadlock is designed for low-security applications. It provides basic protection and should only be used on internal doors such as:

  • Bedrooms
  • Storage or cleaner’s cupboards
  • Other low-risk internal doors

These deadlocks are smaller than 5 lever models because most internal doors are only 35mm thick. In contrast, external doors are typically around 45mm thick.

5 Lever Deadlock – A Stronger Internal Option

A 5 lever deadlock is an upgrade to the 3 lever version. It offers better security due to its larger size and increased key combinations. Some models also include additional security features like:

  • Anti-pick mechanisms
  • Anti-saw bolts
  • Boxed strike plates

Although more robust, these locks do not meet British Standard BS3621 and are only suitable for internal doors at least 45mm thick.

5 Lever British Standard Deadlock – Essential for External Doors

The 5 lever British Standard (BS) deadlock meets BS3621 security requirements and is essential for external doors. Many insurance companies require this lock for contents insurance. It includes:

  • Anti-pick and anti-saw security features
  • A 20mm bolt throw that locks into a steel-reinforced strike plate
  • A hardened steel plate to protect against drilling
  • A security curtain to prevent lock picking

How to Check if Your Lock is BS3621 Rated

Not sure if your current deadlock meets BS3621 standards? Check the front edge of the lock where the bolt is located. If it’s compliant, you’ll see the British Standard kite mark.

Upgrading Your Security

We can repair or replace all the locks mentioned above. However, if your current deadlock is not BS3621 rated, we strongly recommend upgrading to ensure maximum security and compliance with insurance requirements.
